As a summary, this week you are turning in 3-4 design goals and objectives and a spatial program document for the proposed project.

Learning Goal: I’m working on a interior design case study and need a sample draft to help me learn.

this week you are developing functional goals and objectives for your project. Additionally, you will be working on the spatial program for the project as well.

Each project must have well developed 3-4 design goals.

Design goals are functional requirements that can be measured. Design goals are not conceptual or feeling related things. For instance a well organized space is functional and can be measured, while a comfortable space is conceptual and subjective. So, please do not include goals that are subjective, don’t list comfort or happy as being part of your goals.

Your goals should be pulled directly from your values and theories from the week 4 assignment. Come up with the key things that must be met in the project and list them as goals.

Design Objectives are written for each design goal. Design objectives are generic statements that identify how the goal will be achieved in the project. They are generic because you don’t want to identify specific products or items, but you want to explain how you plan on achieving the goal.

Here is an example of a Design Goal and a Design Objective:

Goal #1: Sustainability

Objective #1: All finishes selected for the project will be durable and environmentally conscious. LEED guidelines will be used to evaluate all finishes appropriately.

Please notice that the goal is a measurable item, and the objective lists not just how it will be achieved but also how we will be documenting the achievement.

The spatial program is a list of all the spaces that will be included in the final design of the project. This list must include all spaces/areas, including support spaces that would be required. You do not have to design all the areas on this list, but you do have to document the need for those space and save square footage for them.

In addition to just listing the areas, you must also provide the following things about each area:

Area – The room name or area name

Description – describe the function of the space and how many people it will serve

Area Square Footage – how large does the space have to be

Occupancy Type – per the International Building Codes, what is the occupancy classification of each area

Notes – any additional information for each area based on the goals, objectives, values, and theories.

Total Occupant Load for the whole building (add up all the rooms)

Once you have the total square footage required for the whole building, add 20% of that total into it for circulation spaces (such as hallways and other transition spaces).

You can use the attached excel spreadsheet to complete the program for this project, or you can create your own format, but keep in mind that it must list all the requirements

When you are creating the list of areas, do not forget areas such as entry lobbies, storage facilities, restrooms, server rooms, copy rooms, mechanical rooms, kitchens, breakrooms, etc.

As a summary, this week you are turning in 3-4 design goals and objectives and a spatial program document for the proposed project.

This assignment needs to be turned in as an 11 x 17 presentation. You are encouraged to use the document that you turned in last week and add the requirements for this week at the end. Also, make sure you include a bibliography at the end of the document that includes all references and sources, these can be put in one large list with last week’s references, or you can separate them. You are encouraged to use images, diagrams, and drawings, when possible, in the research packet.

Please use 2D design principles to layout the 11×17 pages. Concentrate on things such as:

  • Symmetry/Asymmetry
  • Balance
  • Negative and Positive Space
  • Unity
  • Variation
  • Alignment
  • Visual Distribution
  • Contrast
  • Consistency

Please avoid overlapping images and do not use drop shadows in your presentation. Furthermore, please limit your font usage to 2 fonts and make sure that all text is legible. The main purpose of a presentation is to communicate information, so using a fancy font that looks good but is not easily legible does not meet the main purpose of the presentation. Do not use all CAPS in sentences or paragraphs. All CAPS should only be used in titles or short phrases. Contrast is very important when it comes to text, your text needs to have enough contrast from the background to be legible, so please do not place green text on a blue background because it does not provide enough contrast.
