Chapters 8 and 9 cover nutrition, and personal health and physical activity. This is a good time to consider behavior change or behavior modification activities (page 151 in the book). Behavior modification uses rewards, punishments and other strategies. When used in school, however, behavior modification techniques ONLY which use positive rewards are used to encourage desirable behavior. It can be used in a group too.
Design a behavior modification activity for your students in the area of nutrition, personal health, or physical activity. Specify the grade level, and design the activity appropriate to that level. Describe the activity in detail, including the time-frame of the activity. The time-frame can be between 1 month and 1 year.

Activity with Behavioral Modification Reward: The children will have an opportunity to set a class goal number of walk/run laps for the month. During recess the class will have a 5 minute lap count opportunity. The class or individual kids can choose to count laps longer than 5 minutes per recess if they want to get the goal! Every child will tell the teacher how many laps they did. It will count toward the goal. The goals will be tiered so that “Bronze ” means the class gets 5 extra minutes of recess the last day of the month, “Silver” means 10 minutes and “Gold” means 15 extra.
