You are asked to demonstrate the relevance and explanatory power of the contending theories in international political economy (IPE).

To do so, select ONE of three news articles from the list of news articles provided below and analyze it from the perspective of an IPE theory (choosing from economic nationalism, liberalism, and the critical perspective).

In your analysis, you should do the followings.

1) Briefly summarize the main idea of the article that you have selected.

2) Identify an IPE theory that you think the most suitable in explaining the content of the news in the article. It is fine to limit the scope of your analysis to certain aspects of the news. But those aspects should be quite significant and not just minor issues. Please explain clearly which aspects of the news you will be focusing on.

3) Discuss the main arguments of the theory of your choice. Here you must draw from an appropriate required readings of session 2-3 (such as List for economic nationalism, Cox for critical theory (Gramscian analysis)) to support your discussion.

4) Provide your analysis of the news from the theory’s perspective. Make sure to support your discussion with detailed information from the news.

Your analysis should be presented in an essay format, consisting of an introduction, a body and a conclusion. Be creative in crafting a brief introduction that would lead your reader to your analysis and in finishing off your essay with a brief concluding thought.

This assignment looks for your ability to apply the knowledge of the required readings and the contending theories in IPE to real issues in the global political economy. Evaluation will be based on the followings.

• Concise and accurate summary of the selected article.
• Ability to choose a suitable theory that helps explain the article.
• A good and relevant discussion of the theory’s main arguments, that draw effectively from the required reading(s).
• Perceptive identification of theoretical traits in the article.
• Good organization and ability to write clearly and coherently.
