GGP120 Global Sustainability

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS: The research project for this class is to propose sustainable development solutions for a specific country of your choosing.  You must submit a final PowerPoint presentation that is a compilation of all of the research material you have found for the country you have chosen.  APA 7 reference formatting is required.

During the first week of the term, you will select a country to “represent” during the term. No two students may write on the same country. Each week, we will be discussing a global sustainability topic, for a total of approximately 8 topics.  Over the course of the term, you will develop a 5-part sustainability plan for your selected country, focusing on any five (5) of the course’s topics ( Population Growth, Climate and Biodiversity, Water resources, Agriculture and Food, Energy) that you choose.  Each part of your plan should highlight at least two (2) country-specific sustainability solutions for one of the eight or so weekly topics and will explain both why your proposed solutions will benefit your selected country and how the solutions will contribute to global sustainability.  The project will require the gathering and compiling of information from various sources and is due by before midnight central time on the Wednesday of Week 8.

The major goal of this project is to have you apply what you learn from the course content to the process of trying to learn about the physical geography of the place you have selected and analyze and evaluate this information based on the actual characteristics you identify for this place. Simple presentations that just list facts will not score well.

The requirements for this project are designed to allow the student to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the course’s Core Learning Outcomes (CLOs), which are:

  1. Describe the meaning of human sustainability and how social, economic, and environmental sustainability contribute to human sustainability.

  1. Construct maps and charts to describe the state of human sustainability on earth.

  1. Analyze trade policies, environmental policies, and current human conflicts in terms of sustainability.

  1. Describe individual, community, state, national, and international level actions that could improve human sustainability in an equitable fashion.

Two of the most important resources for this project are the lecture notes and the internet. The World Factbook maintained by the CIA is an excellent resource for country-specific geographic information that will help you to understand what some of the statistics and challenges are for your country of choice.  You should also find at least 3 journal articles on EBSCO or other Park Library resources along the way to cite that support your positions.

The presentation must have the following format and content:

Cover slide:  Include a cover slide with the following information: title, author, date, class.

National Overview slide(s): Provide basic geographic facts about where your country is located.  This slide must include:

  1. A map showing the country’s location in reference to other nations
  2. A chart showing the country’s form of government, per capita GDP, approximate trade deficit/surplus, and at least 2 other facts that you deem to be significant

Background Information slide(s): Describe any details about your country (unique challenges, strengths, etc.) that you considered to be important in developing your sustainability plan and why you consider them to be important. For example only:

  1. Is your country relatively rich or poor economically?
  2. Does your country have an abundance of natural resources?  A shortage?
  3. To what degree does your country embrace social equality and/or democracy?
  4. With what country(s) does your country have strategic alliances?

At least five (5) Sustainability Plan slides: Give information about each of the five parts of your sustainability plan.  Each part must include the following, which can be conveyed on more than one slide per topic:

  1. Two (2) country-specific sustainability solutions for each topic
  2. Why/how each of the solutions you propose for your country will benefit your country (i.e. what problem do they address and/or what benefit do they provide)
  3. How each of the solutions you propose for your country will promote global sustainability

Works cited slide, titled “References”

Include a list of references for which citations exist within your presentation.  At minimum, you should have at least six (8) different sources from a variety of different source types, with the following additional requirements; you must include:

  • At least two peer-reviewed academic journal articles to support key points
  • No “personal” webpages or blogs; reputable news sources or government sources only
  • No more than three magazine or newspaper articles in total (in any combination)

Citations: Citations must be used appropriately and consistently throughout the presentation and must be in APA 7 format.  A citation is an annotation which indicates that information was taken from a particular source.  Any fact that you obtained from research should appear in the presentation accompanied by a citation.  Typically, a citation must be given immediately following any fact or direct quote that is given.  However, if you are writing a paragraph that is a paraphrasing of information from one source, it is acceptable to simply put the citation once at the end of the paragraph (rather than several times throughout the paragraph).  See the OWL website, search for APA OWL and you will find it. Or see the APA 7 tutorial on the course page.

Submit the final presentation by the due date indicated on the course schedule.  No late presentations will be accepted; no exceptions.
